FAQ

Why are the critical illness definitions in Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance not exactly the same as those in Bowtie Critical Illness Insurance?

In Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance, we have adopted the latest critical illness definitions, which better align with current clinical diagnoses and research findings.

Taking "cancer" as an example, in the latest definition:

  1. Lymphoma and malignant sarcoma have been included in the definition now.
  2. According to the 8th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), bladder cancer and prostate cancer with lower severity and less likelihood of causing serious impact on patients have been excluded.
  3. Based on the World Health Organization's (WHO) new classification of "neuroendocrine tumors," cancers with lower severity and less likelihood of causing serious impact on patients have been excluded.
  4. Tumors specified as "benign," "borderline," and "low malignant potential" in cancer pathology reports have been excluded. These types of tumors have a low possibility of spreading or recurring, are not considered carcinomas, and are less likely to cause serious impact on patients.

  5. Although the coverage scope hasn't changed, the definition of "Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL)" has been rewritten to better align with other insurance companies' wording.

These changes do not mean we have raised the threshold for claims. Every insurance company has the responsibility to update critical illness definitions based on the latest clinical diagnoses and research findings to ensure that insured persons receive appropriate payout.

What happens to the policy if the policyholder, who is also the expectant mother, falls into a coma or passes away?

Generally, the policyholder manages the policy, including paying premiums, making claims, and submitting insured person's information.

If the expectant mother is both the policyholder and the insured person, and falls into a coma or passes away during pregnancy/childbirth, the policy might temporarily lose its manager and miss important document submissions. For example, the child's birth certificate needs to be submitted 14 days before the first policy renewal date, otherwise the policy may become invalid.

If the policyholder is unable to handle policy matters due to health issues:

  1. Relatives can contact us, for instance, to submit the child's birth certificate on behalf of the policyholder to ensure the policy remains effective
  2. For claims, other relatives can assist with the claim process through this form

If the policyholder passes away, the ownership of the plan will be transferred to their estate administrator or executor, who will continue to manage the child's policy. Of course, after the policy takes effect, the policyholder should also keep good records of policy information, such as the policy number, to help relatives assist in managing the policy.

How is Bowtie BB Critical Illness Insurance (Mother & Infant) charged?

If you buy before child is born, you would have to pay during pregnancy period, the premium is not affected by the the expectant mother's age, gestation week, and gender of the fetus, etc. There is a uniform monthly charge, and the premium remains unchanged until the first year's renewal. After renewal, the premium is based on the child's age (completed age at last birthday), starting with the premium for age 0.

If you buy after child is born, the premium is based on the child's age (completed age at last birthday), starting with the premium for age 0.

How will the premium be charged and what will be the sum insured when transferring from Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance to Bowtie Term Critical Illness Insurance?

After successfully transferring to Bowtie Term Critical Illness Insurance, the sum insured will remain at $500,000, and the premium will be charged according to the Bowtie Critical Illness Insurance premium table.

If there are any premium loadings or exclusions on the Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance, these will be carried over to the transferred Bowtie Term Critical Illness Insurance policy.

If you wish to purchase additional coverage or other critical illness insurance with higher protection, you will need to go through underwriting.

Is there an age limit for policy renewal for Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance?

Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance will automatically renew until the next renewal date after the insured person (child) reaches 18 years of age.

After that, the policyholder has the right to transfer the policy to Bowtie Term Critical Illness Insurance. For more details, please refer to this article.

Does Bowtie Baby Term CI Insurance have a waiting period?

There are different waiting periods on Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance, which vary based on the plans. Below is a detailed breakdown:

Buy before child is born

Insured Life Coverage Type Waiting Period
Mother Pregnancy Complications & Compassionate Death Benefit 30 days
Baby Congenital and Juvenile Diseases and Treatments 90 days after birth
Baby 1. Genetic Diseases
2. ICU Admission ≥ 72 hours
3. Phototherapy for Severe Jaundice
4. Compassionate Death Benefit
No waiting period

Buy after child is born

Insured Life Coverage Type Waiting Period
Baby All items 90 days
(from the policy effective date)

Any diagnosis or conditions that arise within this period will not be covered.

Why having such a complicated design?

When designing our products, we need to balance protection and risk.

Adding different waiting periods is to prevent some insured persons from immediately purchasing insurance after discovering disease risks during prenatal check-ups, showing symptoms after birth, or being diagnosed with illnesses, and then immediately filing claims, which would create an unfair situation for other insured persons.

Does Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance have a cooling-off period?

Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance comes with a 21-day cooling-off period, regardless of whether it is purchased during pregnancy or directly after the child is born. If you cancel your policy within the cooling period, and have not received any claims payments or have any claims in progress, we will refund all premiums paid in full.

I already have Bowtie VHIS / If I plan on getting Bowtie VHIS for my child, do I still need Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance?

Yes, Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance complements VHIS by covering protection gaps, including:

  • Medical conditions within the first 15 days of birth,
  • Congenital diseases diagnosed before age 8*,
  • Pregnancy complications starting from 18 weeks.

Expectant parents/parents can consider adding Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance to obtain more comprehensive protection.

* Waiting period applies, while period is different if you are applying before/ after birth. For details, please refer to product terms and conditions.

Can I own both Bowtie Term CI and Bowtie Children's Growth Term CI?

Yes, but the max. total critical illness coverage across all Bowtie CI plans is capped at HK$4 Million. This means:

  1. If your child (as insured person) currently owns ≤ HK$3.5 Million in Bowtie Term CI, you can still apply Bowtie Children's Growth Term CI on top (which has a fixed sum insured of HK$500K) for him/ her.
  2. If your child (as insured person) already owned > HK$3.5 Million in Bowtie Term CI, unfortunately, you cannot apply Bowtie Children's Growth Term CI for him/ her as the total sum insured would exceed the HK$4 Million cap.

If you reduce the sum insured of your existing critical illness policy in order to buy Bowtie Children's Growth Term CI, it might be counterproductive as the insured person may fail underwriting due to their health condition, which could result in losing the original protection while also being unable to obtain the new coverage.

Note: The pregnancy complication of $100k in Bowtie Children's Growth Term CI will not be counted in the max. total critical illness coverage.

What are the difference between Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance and Bowtie Critical illness series now?

Bowtie Children’s Growth Critical Illness Insurance offers targeted protection for children’s health risks, including genetic diseases, congenital conditions, pediatric illnesses and treatments, and other neonatal conditions*. If the policy is purchased before the child is born, coverage begins at birth. If the policy is purchased after birth, coverage begins once the policy becomes effective.

Meanwhile, the Bowtie Critical Illness (CI) series is designed for adult health risks, offering early-stage and severe CI protection.

Please note that both Bowtie Children’s Growth CI and the CI series come with a waiting period. Any diagnosis of a covered condition made during this waiting period will not be eligible for a claim. For details, please refer to the product terms and conditions*.

Even if your child is already covered under the Bowtie CI series, you can still purchase Bowtie Children’s Growth CI as an additional layer of protection. However, the total sum insured under the Bowtie CI series is capped at HK$4 Million.

For details, please refer to this article 👉 Can I have both Bowtie Term Critical Illness Insurance and Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance?

Market-unique features of Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance

  1. Pure Protection, No Savings Component
Unlike most insurers bundling savings, Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance focuses solely on protection, providing best value coverage on the market.

  2. [First-ever] Cover Genetic Diseases
While similar products offer comparable coverage, they often overlook genetic diseases (known as "inborn errors of metabolism"). Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance covers 17 genetic diseases, supporting short-term/long-term treatment and care costs for children.
Although rare, these diseases can severely impact a child's growth and development. Parents also need to invest more effort in care throughout the child's growth.

  3. Protection That Gets Cheaper Over Time
We understand that child-rearing expenses increase over time, so we've intentionally priced the risk according to different ages, making the premiums cheaper as you continue to pay!

Applying before baby is born, pregnancy complication coverage for expectant mother is also provided.

What type of insurance is Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance?

Bowtie Children's Growth Term Critical Illness Insurance is a term critical illness insurance for children that provides protection against health risks for children. It is a pure critical illness protection without any savings component:

  • Applying before the child's birth: It first provides pregnancy complication coverage for the expectant mother. The mother's coverage is effective until 15 days after the child's birth. After that, from the child's birth date, coverage is provided for the child.
  • Applying after the child's birth: It provides coverage for genetic diseases, congenital and juvenile diseases and treatments, or other newborn conditions for the child.

If the insured person (including the expectant mother and her child) is diagnosed with any of the covered illnesses under the plan, we will provide a lump sum claim payout. The use of this claim payout is unrestricted and can be used for treatment or care expenses.
