What are the typical examination items for pre-marital check-ups? Are there differences between men and women?

In general, pre-marital check-ups include basic physical examinations, as well as testing for infectious diseases and genetic conditions. Some common tests include hepatitis B, thalassemia (Mediterranean anemia), syphilis, HIV, Rh(D) factor, and rubella antibody testing.

There are some differences in the examinations for men and women. Men typically undergo semen analysis to test the quantity, morphology, motility, volume, and pH of sperm. Women, on the other hand, may undergo rubella antibody testing to ensure it does not affect fetal development. Additionally, if a woman has had sexual experience, she may also undergo a cervical smear test to screen for cervical cancer.

Why undergo premarital health check-ups?

Everyone may have undiagnosed hidden illnesses that could potentially affect themselves, their partners, and even be passed on to the next generation. Through premarital health check-ups, not only can you understand your own and your partner’s health conditions, but you can also detect early or asymptomatic diseases, especially those that are contagious or hereditary.

Early detection and appropriate treatment can reduce the impact on your partner and future children, preparing you for building a family.

When is the best time to undergo premarital health check-ups?

It is recommended to undergo premarital health check-ups within six months to one year before marriage. This allows early understanding of both parties’ health conditions and provides enough time for follow-up examinations, treatments, or vaccinations, facilitating better family planning and fertility.

What is the difference between premarital and fertility check-ups?

Premarital health check-ups allow couples to better understand their health conditions and detect hidden genetic and infectious diseases. Whether planning for pregnancy or not, premarital check-ups can be considered.

In contrast, fertility check-ups are designed for couples planning to conceive. They help assess fertility capabilities, chances of conception, and detect infectious diseases and hidden genetic conditions. They not only safeguard the health of the fetus but also allow for early fertility treatments if infertility causes are identified, increasing the chances of pregnancy.

In terms of examination items, besides basic health check-ups, testing for hidden genetic conditions and infectious diseases, fertility check-ups also include ultrasound scans of the uterus, ovaries, and bladder for women, and health examinations of the prostate, bladder, and testicles for men to assess the couple’s chances of pregnancy.
