Does VHIS Cover Full Body Checkup?
Voluntary health insurance provides coverage for "diagnostic" examination items
When you feel unwell and seek medical treatment at a clinic or hospital, the doctor may suggest that you undergo some checking procedures based on your symptoms.
For example, if you have been suffering from stomach pains for a long time, the doctor may suggest that you undergo a gastroscopy, CT or MRI scan to further investigate the problem, and these items belong to “diagnostic bodycheck”.
According to the regulations of the VHIS by the Health Bureau, all recognized schemes must provide the following coverage for insured persons:
- Endoscopic with medically necessity
- Diagnosis imaging tests (CT, MRI, PET scans)*
Of course, these checkings must be performed under the written recommendation of the registered doctor. In other words, the coverage of VHIS includes only “diagnostic” bodycheck.
- *Tests include computed tomography scans ("CT" scans), magnetic resonance imaging ("MRI" scans), positron emission tomography scans ("PET" scans", PET-CT combination, and PET-MRI combination.
Coverage for "diagnostic" bodycheck under VHIS
Taking Bowtie Flexi Regular and Bowtie Pink as examples, the following table shows the coverage amounts for some bodycheck items:
Benefit Limit | ||
Bodycheck | Flexi Regular | Bowtie Pink |
Miscellaneous expenses (including ultrasound and X-ray and their analysis^) | HK$18,000 / year | Full coverage# |
Prescribed Diagnostic Imaging Tests, including
| HK$26,000 / year (with 30% co-insurance) | Full coverage# |
Common examinations, including:
| Surgeon’s fee HK$6,000 – 30,000* / session | Full coverage# |
- ^Coverage only includes relevant tests conducted during hospitalization and day surgery
- *The coverage amount listed here only includes surgeon's fees. VHIS also provides coverage for other procedures, such as specialist fees, room charges, anesthesiologist fees, operating theratre fees, miscellaneous expenses, etc. The benefit amount for each item will be determined based on the complexity of the examination, and the VHIS Schedule of Surgical Procedures has classified most examinations / surgeries according to their complexity (from Minor to complex).
- #The Bowtie Pink Voluntary Health Insurance series fully covers eligible medical expenses such as diagnosis, hospitalisation, surgery, and prescribed non-surgical cancer treatments (except in the United States), and is subject to annual benefit limits and lifetime benefit limits. If the claim involves confinement in a Mainland China Hospital unlisted in / a High-end Mainland China Hospital listed in the "List of Designated Hospitals in Mainland China" / confinement in a room higher than the restricted ward class / a pre-existing condition, the relevant benefit payable may be adjusted.
Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are common diagnostic imaging tests. In simple cases, these tests can be performed in a clinic and do not require hospitalization.
For example, if a doctor wants to check if a patient’s finger pain is due to soft tissue problems, an MRI performed in a clinic is sufficient for diagnosis.
However, traditional health insurance mostly only provides coverage for diagnostic imaging tests (such as MRI) performed during hospitalization, so many insured individuals intentionally arrange for hospitalization checks, which can waste time and may affect claims if they do not meet the medical requirements.
But with VHIS, there is no such restriction! Insured persons can still be covered for diagnostic imaging tests (CT, MRI, PET scans) performed in medical centers/clinics!
Is there any VHIS that provides coverage for preventive health check-ups?
As mentioned above, VHIS does not cover the cost of preventive health check-ups. However, Bowtie believes that prevention is better than cure, so in addition to VHIS, we provide additional check-up options to protect their customers’ health as early as possible.
